Used in the diagnosis of pernicious anemia and evaluation of vitamin B12 deficiency. Intrinsic factor antibodies are specific for pernicious anemia but are not found in all patients; ~60-70% of patients with pernicious anemia will have antibodies against intrinsic factor. Results should be interpreted in conjunction with vitamin B12 levels, CBC results and parietal cell antibodies.
